In the late '70's, after college, I arrived in Indiana, & met Jarl Waggoner, die-hard Reds fan. He had enjoyed the Big Red Machine during that decade, but by then, Pete Rose was with the Phillies, & I was a Phillies fan! We in Indiana were within reach of WLW, & I have a memory of Jarl & I listening to a game, his bemoaning a play with at least 2 Reds' errors, allowing a Dodger to score. The man liked his baseball. And clearly, he knows it, not just by way of rules, but also its traditions, stars of the past, & significant statistics. When you grow up with baseball, as I did, in the '60's, great plays & great players are pasted to the mind, simply because TV pasted the images, or because radio did. Also coming with this were Old Timers' Games, interviews with past players, & a general education on all-things baseball, both past & present. There was no YouTube then, & Ken Burns had not yet produced his 18 & 1/2 hour documentary on baseball. So, we watched the local games, saw national broadcasts on NBC & ABC, & read the Sporting News, like it was a weekly baseball devotional book. My Dad also helped with this education, telling me how Bobby Thompson's "Shot Heard Around the World" broke his heart, in 1951, & how Johnny Mize "could hit a ball a mile." I suspect that Jarl had the same kind of baseball education that I did.
"Major League Challenge" has a format of a test booklet. Numbered questions, & then check the answers on the next page. Each test is under the umbrella of a theme (such as "It's A Team Game"), & the questions are usually multi-generational. Given my baseball experience, & knowledge of baseball before the '60's, I could answer perhaps 2/3 of the questions, but for the other third, I'd have to defer to my grandfather! The questions really stretch one's mind, & even as one may not answer every question, the answers serve to continue one's baseball education. Amazon can give the reader a taste of the format & sample questions & answers. When I saw how much fun it was, I had to buy it.
